Great Yarmouth Town wall
This project saw us working for Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust to rebuild a section of the Town wall that had collapsed. The original construction of the wall was knapped flint laid in random formation using lime mortar. Over the years the wall had been repaired with stone that had come from a near by church, Brick, cobble flints and large areas of cementitious mortar.
Our masons were tasked with job of propping the existing wall next to the brake to prevent any uncontrolled collapses. Then match the wall as closely as possible using a mixture of old photographs and by taking reference from the wall that remained.
We reused as much of the collapsed wall material as possible but had to replace 20-25% of the flint due to the cement mortar being too hard for us to remove. This meant we had to source black flints to match and knap them as we built. The most time consuming element of this project was to knap and fit the flint gallets in the mortar joints between the flints.
A labour of love to ensure as close a match to the original construction as possible. Do you have a flint built structure in need of repair? If so please drop us a line, we are happy to help
